Parenting brings all kinds of challenges! I have found that my kids (especially my boys) need to take some “brain breaks” during the day to keep them happy and ready to learn. Sitting at the table doing school work can often lead to tears and frustration…for all of us. I have become more interested in brain breaks over the past year as I have become aware of the sensory processing issues that one of my children has.
I don’t know how realistic it is for public school teachers to incorporate active breaks during the day (from what I’ve read it seems that recess periods seem to be dwindling, but maybe you can talk to your child’s teacher about using brain breaks in the classroom… it can’t hurt to try!).
Right now, I’m homeschooling my youngest kiddos so I have a lot of control over our schedule….so I try to incorporate some brain breaks during the day.
What is a brain break? Why should I use them?
This is a great post that explains what brain breaks are and why kids need them, as well as giving some ideas of things to do with your kiddos.
How do I organize our brain breaks?
I wrote out brain break activities on popsicle craft sticks and put them in a little bucket (I found my bucket at Target) to rotate our brain break activities.
I also created a Brain Break BINGO chart for some more activities to help my boys move their bodies and work out their extra energy!

Make it Happen!
- Create a Brain Break bucket for your kids. Get some popsicle sticks and write down some different activities on each one.
- Use the bucket when your kids need a break from homework or chores.
