Have you ever woke up with that feeling in your chest or your stomach where you knew if someone started pushing any of your buttons that you were going to blow? You knew you were a mom in a bad mood…and you wondered how you could stop this mom funk in it’s tracks!
I have been there! This motherhood gig is the most important work I can be doing…but I also know it’s hard sometimes to keep my emotions in check!
As a stay at home mom…who also homeschools most of her children…it’s not easy to walk away from my button pushers! They live here and I’m responsible for them.
Why Do I Get in a Bad Mood?
I can almost always feel my bad mom mood creeping in during a certain time of the month…but there are other things that can trigger me as well…
- I’m taking things too personally
- I’m overwhelmed
- My expectations are too high
- I haven’t been taking care of myself (physically or emotionally)
- I have been living contrary to my mom mission statement
- Our home cleaning routine isn’t happening and feel I’ve lost control
As I sat here thinking about what I can do when I have these bad mood moments…I realized that I needed a game plan! So when I’m on the verge of blowing my top…I can look at my list that I made when I was feeling sane and calm.
Just to be clear…I am not a health care professional. If you need to see a doctor, a therapist, or call a hotline…don’t hesitate. Take care of yourself so you can take care of your people!
How to Get Out of a Mom Funk!
So…here is my list of things to do when I’m in a bad mood. I’m going to print this out and tape it to my bathroom closet…so I can have it handy when I need it!
- Tell my kids…they can be more patient with me if I explain that I’m trying to be happy…but I’m having a hard day today.
- Take a walk…on my treadmill if I have to or outside if I can. Being outside can do wonders for my emotions.
- Drink lots of water…there is something about being hydrated that can help me relax…if I’m taking care of myself…I can better take care of those around me.
- Use my essential oils. When I’m struggling I rub on the Peace and Cheer.
- Listen to some fun tunes. My kids are old enough that I can go in my bedroom for 15 minutes, turn the music on loud, and dance like no one is watching (I know…you would think I was a moody teenager!)
- Clean something…there is something about being in a bad mood that makes me want to clean up, declutter, and organize!
- Make a cup of tea. A cup of herbal tea can help…especially if I can sit down in a quiet place (that requires me referring back to #1!)
- Take a nap…I know with kids this isn’t always possible…but if I can just set my alarm for 20-30 minutes!
- Talk to someone…this is a hard one for me! I tend to hold things inside and feel like I don’t have anyone I can share my feelings with…but I’ve learned from experience that talking it out helps me
- Listen to a life coaching podcast. There are a few podcasts that can help me step back and look at my thoughts, emotions and circumstances in an objective way. I have learned a lot from Jody Moore’s podcast, Better than Happy..
