Midlife is an incredible journey filled with self-discovery, empowerment, and, let’s face it, a few more adventures on our horizon. It’s exciting…and it’s important to chat about something equally important—personal safety.
I don’t want to instill fear; I want to empower you with knowledge and tips to help navigate life’s twists and turns with confidence. So, get comfy, and let’s chat about how to stay safe while rocking the fabulousness that is midlife.

Stay Aware and Trust Your Instincts:
*Pay attention to your surroundings, whether you’re walking in your neighborhood, traveling, or out running errands. Distraction can make you vulnerable.
*Stick to well-lit, populated areas, especially at night. Avoid shortcuts through alleys, parks, or isolated spaces.
*Trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel right—whether it’s a person, situation, or location—remove yourself immediately.
*Walk with confidence! Keep your head up, maintain good posture, and project awareness. Perpetrators tend to target those who appear distracted or timid.
Stay Connected:
*Always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. A quick text to a friend or family member can make all the difference.
*Use location-sharing apps with trusted contacts when heading somewhere new or traveling alone.
*Build a strong support system. Surround yourself with people who genuinely care about your well-being and safety.
Self-Defense Training:
*Consider taking a self-defense class to build confidence and learn simple techniques that could help in an emergency. Many community centers, YMCAs, and gyms offer self-defense courses—check their schedules!
*Even a basic understanding of how to break free from a grab or use your voice effectively can be a game-changer.
Carry Personal Safety Items:
*Carry personal safety items like a whistle, pepper spray, or personal alarm. Make sure you know how to use these tools, practice using them at home.
*I recently purchased this personal safety alarm and pepper spray for myself…and I feel a little bit better knowing I can cause a little ruckus if I need to!
Be Mindful of Technology:
*Avoid walking while glued to your phone. Scrolling or texting makes you an easy target.
*If listening to music or a podcast, keep the volume low or use just one earbud to stay aware of your environment.
*Be mindful of what you share online. Posting your location in real time or announcing when you’re home alone can put you at risk.
Home Safety:
*Always lock doors and windows—even when you’re home.
*Consider a video doorbell or home security system for added protection.
*Keep porch lights on at night and trim any overgrown bushes that could serve as hiding spots.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle:
*Your overall health impacts your ability to react in an emergency. Regular exercise improves strength, balance, and reflexes.
*Prioritize good nutrition and adequate sleep to stay alert and focused.
*Keep up with regular health checkups—staying on top of your wellness can boost your confidence and security.
Stay Informed:
*Stay updated on safety tips and local news, especially regarding any recent incidents in your area.
Emergency Contacts:
*Keep a list of emergency contacts readily available, both in your phone and written down in a safe place at home. You can find an emergency contacts form in my Emergency Binder.
*Keep a written list of emergency contacts in your home and car, including roadside assistance and trusted contacts. If something happens, knowing who to call and what to do can prevent panic.
Financial Safety:
*Midlife women are often targeted by financial scams, especially online or over the phone. Be wary of unsolicited calls, emails, or messages requesting money or personal information.
*Never share passwords or financial details with strangers.
*Consider using fraud alerts or identity theft protection to monitor your accounts.
Car Safety:
*Keep your car well-maintained—regular oil changes, tire checks, and brake inspections can prevent unexpected breakdowns. Car maintenance and repairs can be costly and sometimes require some planning ahead and budgeting.
*Always lock your doors and park in well-lit, populated areas.
*Have an emergency kit in your car, including a flashlight, first aid supplies, and a phone charger.
Travel Safety:
*If traveling alone, research your destination, stay in reputable accommodations, and use reliable transportation. I like to keep my gas tank at least half full when I am traveling so that I am not forced to get gas somewhere that might be unsafe.
*When using public transportation, wait in well-lit and populated areas. Sit near the driver or conductor if possible.
