Why do I do this to myself? Every time we go on a vacation…whether it is for a weekend or a week…I tell my kids what they need to pack. And then I hope they remember what I tell them! I’m busy trying to figure out who is going to care for our animals, and our garden, putting the mail on hold, and thinking about what I can bring to keep my kids busy while sitting in a car for several hours! I don’t have time to pack for them!
Wouldn’t it be easier to have a basic road trip packing list all ready that they could look at and check off? Why yes…it would!
Other Vacation Packing Tips:
- I like to spend the day before I pack getting caught up on the laundry (or at least as much as possible!) This helps everyone see what clothing is available when they are checking things off their road trip packing list.
- I have some kids who think they have to bring a pair of clothes for every day that we will be gone! It takes some convincing to help them realize that we will have access to washing machines if we need them…and since when do they ever put on a new pair of clothes every day (except for a certain teenage girl!)
- Different colored backpacks for everyone to pack their stuff in is really helpful for everyone to know where their bag is (although my teenagers think they have to use a bigger duffel bag now!)
- If we are taking Sunday/dress clothes…I like to keep those all together. When my kids have their own church clothes they tend to end up wrinkled in the bottom of their backpack!
- I like to keep hoodies and jackets in one bag in the back of the car. Since we don’t always need them and we don’t always to remember to grab them when we take off for the day…it’s easier if they are already together in the car.
- When we go places that I know will be crowded (like amusement parks), I like to dress my younger four (my teenagers have a mind of their own!) in matching brightly colored shirts. I like to keep those shirts in my bag so they don’t end up being worn on the wrong day!
- Non-electronic entertainment can be hard for my kids to come up with. I like Mad Libs, card games, CDs the family can listen to, and a notebook with colored pencils.
Make it Happen!
- Get your printable road trip packing list for kids!
- Give it to your kids on packing day! (you may need to write down the number of shirts, shorts, etc)
- Take care of the vacation prep things that YOU need to do.
- Enjoy the trip!

This is perfect as so many families are taking or planning trips for the summer. My family is probably spending most of the summer at home, but that’s preferable for me. 😉 However, we are thinking about going to the beach in August, so we shall see. If we do, I will be coming back for this. Pinning! Thanks so much for linking up over at Mommyhood Moments!
Such a good idea about dressing them in brightly coloured tshirts. We recently went out and the boys were in matching t-shirts. The other half said that at leas tif one went missing we wouldn’t need to describe what he was wearing! I’ll rememnber this tip for the future though! Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday
Thanks for sharing so much information. Ideas like these are so useful for a travel freak like me! Looking forward to going for a road trip soon! 🙂
