There is something about summer that brings a smile to kids’ faces! Thoughts of free time with nothing to do sounds wonderful…but at least around here…it gets boring! I have done a summer reading BINGO challenge with my kids for several years.
Thankfully, most of my kids have enjoyed reading from a young age so it has been easy to get them excited about this…especially when there are extra rewards involved!
What Counts on the Summer Reading BINGO printable?
There are many ways you can set this up….do what works best for your family.
Some years I let them read whatever they wanted…other years I give them a few guidelines.
Sometimes I specify some types of books that I want them to include on their summer reading BINGO chart (nothing wrong with encouraging them to broaden their horizons!) They can still read books that they want…but somewhere on their BINGO chart they need to have the following:
- historical fiction
- classic
- biography
- non-fiction
The past couple of years I also added some activities that aren’t reading related for those that aren’t super excited about reading. .
- Volunteer work and scholarship applications for my 2 oldest (my oldest has volunteered at the local public library and the zoo)
- Older children get credit for teaching the younger ones a new skill (one year one of my daughters set up a cooking class for the youngest four!)
- Cub Scout belt loops and pins (one year my son had fun working with a friend to get some extra awards since our troop takes the summer off)
- I’ve even tried credit for keeping screen time/social media time down
- I haven’t tried this yet…but adding some service activities could be a fun idea.
Rewards for Completing the Summer Reading BINGO chart:
Another twist I added…not only do I give out individual prizes but I give out collective prizes. This tactic (hopefully) encourages teamwork and helps them encourage one another.
Mom Note: You can set up the rewards however you like…I have tried giving out more rewards…but it just got too overwhelming for me and I couldn’t keep up with it! Do what works best for your family.
My kids know that when they see these summer reading charts up on the wall…summer is here and the fun can begin!

The other year, I did a reading bingo for my oldest, to help him remember to read in the summer, but I never thought of adding other things to it. What a neat idea! I’m glad I found you on the link party!
I only started adding other activities last year…it has been a success!
#TwinklyTuesday – this sounds like a great idea to keep kids busy, I wonder if my two year will understand the concept this summer 🙂
You could give it a try! I’m sure that a 2 year old would love to earn some fun treats or outings by having books read to them!

What a brilliant idea! Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday
LOOks like a great idea for keeping them entertained – especially for longer activities 🙂
What a fun idea!
This is a wonderful idea! I’m totally focused on making sure my kids are reading and expanding their horizons in that way – but this is so much more well-rounded! Good work, mama.
